Julian Bialowas

Julian Bialowas is a designer and photographer born in Montréal, raised in Calgary, and now based in San Francisco. He is Hipcamp's founding designer, where his work sits at the intersection of the outdoors and the digital tools that help people find their way into it. His photography—shooting landscapes and the particular stillness of remote places—has been featured by Apple, Parks Canada, Outside Magazine, Chronicle Books, and Gestalten. He has collaborated with The North Face, Mountain Hardwear, VSCO, Levi's, REI Co-op, MEC, Huckberry, AllTrails, and others.

The California Camping Guide grew out of years of firsthand exploration. Julian has spent weeks at a time moving through the state—from the fog-draped redwood coast to the high desert of the Eastern Sierra—building a mental map of the places that actually deserve a return trip. His goal with this guide is the same as his goal with a camera: strip away the noise and show people what is really there.

He is currently working toward visiting every unit of the National Park System. California alone keeps him busy for months at a time.
